Let’s be honest. How often to you buy clothes you never wear? How many of these items are still hanging in your closet taking up space and draining your energy? The truth is if you haven’t worn it yet, you probably won’t. Wouldn’t you love to stop buying stuff you’ll never wear? Imagine the money you’ll save.
You can have a closet full of clothes you love to wear simply by learning a few simple rules and then following those rules when you shop. To get you started let’s begin with the rules of line, design, proportion and colour combinations.
All clothing has lines and those lines affect how a garment looks on us. Lines affect how a style looks on us because our eyes automatically follow lines. Where the lines goes, where it ends and how long it is affects the garment’s appearance. There are usually several lines found in an item of clothing but let’s talk about the diagonal line. A diagonal line takes the eye to the point where the line ends. You will find diagonal lines in off-the-shoulder tops and dresses; skirts with a diagonal hem and tops and dresses with diagonal stripes. This type of line draws the eye downward and creates a slimming look.
Clothing or accessories can make a person appear larger or smaller simply by how it is worn. For example, a large purse carried by a small, petite woman will be out of balance and make her appear smaller. The size of the pattern in a dress or top has to be in proportion to the person wearing it or it will create an out-of-balance look making them appear either larger or smaller. A small person looks better in a small print.
Color combinations also make a difference in appearance. For example, wearing a light color skirt or pant with a dark top makes the lower half appear larger. Light colors attract light and dark colors recede so when colors are put together the contrast exaggerates the difference.
Mixing and matching styles and patterns is a great way to extend your wardrobe and wear more of the clothes you own. For example, buying a pant, jacket and skirt all in a neutral color and in the same fabric allows prints, colors and accessories to be added making a variety of outfits. However, there are rules to be followed when mixing shapes and prints that can make or break your look. For example, be careful matching patterns. Print or patterned shoes are best worn with a neutral outfit unless you are an expert in matching designs and patterns.
Since women are different shapes and sizes dressing to suit your body shape is important when choosing styles so that you’ll love and wear all that you buy. For example, a ruffled blouse looks great on a woman who has narrow shoulders and small bust; however, it will make her friend who has wide shoulders and a large bust look larger.
Being well dressed; that is, dressed to suit the occasion, your personal style and being well groomed, is a definite asset. It makes the difference in the type of opportunities and people you attract.
